I used my debit card at a small town grocery store (less than $5). The merchant said the computer told her to hold my debit card. She refused to give it back. The law had to be called. Did she have that right?

Actually…. yes.

The message to "hold the card" came from your bank and means that the card was reported lost or stolen.

She is doing what your bank (who owns the card… not you) told her to do.

Most of us don’t want to get in an argument and simply refuse the card as a form of payment and hand it back. Some of us have a magnet ready for this occasion that is used to render the magnetic strip useless before the card is handed back to you.

And every now and then…. one of us is brave enough to do as told.
